So day 2 back to school and I have a cheeky tattoo booked in. This didn't happen on purpose just confidently. I love having tattoos, as a general rule as long as I am minus stress, I actually find them relaxing. Rather like enforced meditation.

I am partlcar about what I wear to go for a tattoo, comfort is key. I take a pair of shorts and socks and I wear a body, this means most body parts can be accessed with ease. I like to wear comfy track pants and a loose top so that after the tattoo nothing feels tight or restricting if the skin is tender.

This time I had a tattoo on my lower leg and upper arm which meant I left the tattoo parlour slightly rustling but in extreme comfort 😉.

I can't believe the summer is over. I love spending time with Lyric, he is a joy to spend time with and a fun travelling companion. But with the summer holiday comes a lack of time or at least I loose time and this blog looses its self...

But I'm back and I have a new schedule. I have decided to try achieving tasks, jobs, chores and the fun stuff in 30 minute slots. So I write this with a timer next to me, I don't have to finish but I am going to stick with one thing for half an hour and whatever I achieve is great. The idea is that I can manage big jobs by breaking them down into manageable amounts.

And each half hour achieved is a bonus and to be celebrated 💕.

A few years ago I stumbled along upon a shop in Notting Hill that sold dead stock from the 70's and 80's. I tend not to go shopping there too often as I have a tendency to get over excited. At the start of the summer holidays I popped in to treat myself and the owner mentioned he had a bag of old denim shorts. They were old jeans from the 70's that had been worn out and in the 80's cut into shorts and patched. They were super cool and at £5 a pair it was hard to not to explode with denim happiness!

Dead stock definition - Brand new, never worn and from a decade before or earlier.

The Glasses Chain

There are two things I love about this outfit. Firstly the bright red boots, a recent sale purchase and a brilliant boot - the heel is good enough to make a quick sprint and the colour speaks for itself - It doesn't matter how you feel or how bad your hair might be these boots radiate 😊.

Secondly, the glasses chain. Oh, how I love the glasses chain ❤️. Currently the glasses chain has come back into fashion curtesy of Frame Chain on MatchesFashion.com - they have some amazing styles. I love the fact that when I feel I have lost my glasses, I simply have to look around my neck! Plus I love that you can update your style and even your update your glasses with adding or changing an accessory. I bought the above chain from Amazon for £6 which was actually for two chains!

Hand Block Printed Indian Dress

The summer holidays are here, in fact we are almost past the middle point. The sun hasn't stopped shining, the grass is a burnt ochre colour and at times we have flagged under the heat. Gently the heat is giving to  slightly cooler mornings. Which is where I find myself on a Wednesday morning at 8am - a slightly cooler morning trip to Regents Park (bike lessons for 'our kid').

The fact I turned up i something other than pjs was a start and I simply tired to what I know works - Indian dress, Levis jacket and trainers - tried and trusted!

I have a huge collection of vintage indian hand block printed dresses - I love them .

Woodblock printing on textiles is the process of using incised wooden blocks to print on to natural finer cloth such as linen and cotton. It is the earliest, simplest and slowest of all methods of textile writing and also one of the most enjoyable to do yourself. Block printing by hand is a slow process. It is, however, capable of yielding highly artistic results, some of which are unobtainable by any other method.

Sizzling In Paris

IMG_5199.jpg

Paris in August is hot ☀️, especially this year. Every summer we come to Paris in August, which is when tradinally everyone leaves Paris but actualy they don't all leave Paris and everything is open. This is year though, I do confess is super hot. Temperatures reaching 34 degrees today... ♨️

I packed well but its always nice to find something new to buy whilst away but given most things I buy are second hand and in need of a wash! Yesterday I managed to find a light cotton dress in Free P Star and after a quick hand wash in the bath tub last night, its now dry and ready to wear (the advantages of hot weather) 💕.

Its the summer holidays and we are already on week 3, it is crazy how time flies - literally. The first week we were in Ibiza (I didn't post a thing, in fact I don't remember doing a thing - exhaustion literally hit me! ).

The second week we were back in London, Lyric was at an Ecological holiday camp for a week and I was resident driver and sandwich maker aka from home. Amongst that we spent the week embarking on Tie-dye - more to come next week (Tie-dye is so much fun!).

And now we are in Paris, I actually feel refreshed and ready to hit the Parisan streets for some serious flea marketing. Which brings me to my favourite vintage shop in Paris 'Free P Star'. Free P Star is ace, it is a mixture of 1 euro clothes and some more choicer pieces up to about 30 euros, mostly items hover around the 10-20 euros. Clothes are bought out in large white sacks and distributed around the shop as and when the need more stock which can be hourly! my need to you back twice daily is justified (at least to me!) 😉.

The sun is shining here in London, in fact at the moment we are leading the temperature board for Europe. It is at these times that I love wearing an oversized, slightly on the large side dress. Nothing beats a cotton dress 💕.

In fact the dress I am wearing is from Mary's Living & Giving Charity Shop in Primrose Hill - huge recommendation! Of all the ML&G Charity shops this one is my favourite. Not least because I have found the most fantastic things there but also because the charity supports Save The Children. And a walk around Primrose Hill (the actual hill) and the village with its array of cake and ice cream shops, clothing and life style shops is a fun way to spent a hour or two...

My top 3 things to do in Primrose Hill...

Walk through and over Primrose Hill (Park), Nip into Mary's Living & Giving Charity Shop, Pop to Primrose Bakery and have a milk shake 💛.

Fake It Till You Make It Or Just Add Sparkle

It's approaching the end of term and I am shattered. I am ready for lazy days where there is no school run, no forcing breakfast at small children or even having to make breakfast (not that anyone will starve, there is a fridge full of food). I'm longing for a summer reminiscent of Swallows & Amazons - romantic notion I know...

In the depths of my tiredness, I drew upon the one thing I know helps me - bright clothes and if possible even brighter shoes - no harm in blinding people with your shoes!

Roll on summer holidays 💛.

Sponge Bob Square Pants

T-shirt - E-bay, Skirt - Traid, Belt Bag - Champion.

I have learnt there are some super positive things to be had with wearing a bright and rather comical t-shirt.

Wearing bright yellow can only make you feel great, it's super sunny even on an over cast day.

A glimpse of Sponge Square Pants makes the sourest of people smile, be it yourself or others.

Second hand, vintage or worn t-shirts are generally super soft to wear and during the heat of summer - the bigger and baggy-er the better.

And lastly I found this t-shirt on e-bay, a find a bit of e-bay searching is good for some mental time out... or at least thats my excuse!

The One Piece Jumpsuit

Jumpsuit - Flea Market East London, Sandals - Saltwater, Belt Bag - Champion.

An absolue 'go to' for me is a jumpsuit. I love them.

In fact this is my 'go to' a jumpsuit and a belt bag. No nothing to come undone, hands free.

The jumpsuit was created as a a one piece garment with arms and legs, covering everything barr feet, hands and head. Originally used by parachuters.

The original skydivers' jumpsuits were simple garments designed to insulate the body from the cold of high altitudes and minimize risk of covering important handles and grips.

The only down side is nipping to the bathroom - when the whole garment needs to almost come off but hey! who cares for the majority of the time this is the easiest garment to wear.

Vintage Indian Dress

IMG_2893-1.jpg

Textile printing is the process of applying colour to fabric in definite patterns or designs. In properly printed fabrics the colour is bonded with the fibre, so as to resist washing. Textile printing is related to dyeing but in dyeing properly the whole fabric is uniformly covered with one colour, whereas in printing one or more colours are applied to it in certain parts only, and in sharply defined patterns.

In printing, wooden blocks, stencils, engraved plates, rollers, or silkscreens can be used to place colours on the fabric. Colourants used in printing contain dye thickened to prevent the colour from spreading by capillary attraction beyond the limits of the pattern or design.

A Patchwork Skirt

IMG_2889.jpg

Patchwork or 'pieced work' is a form of needlework, which involves sewing smaller pieces of fabric to create a bigger piece / design. This is usually created using a repeat pattern. Using geometric shapes helps making them easier to sew together.

The skirt above is made entirely from pieces of Laura Ashley scraps and small pieces of fabric.

Evidence of patchwork—piecing small pieces of fabric together to create a larger piece and quilting layers of textile fabrics together—has been found throughout history. The earliest examples have been located in Egyptian tombs and also in early age of China about 5000 years ago. Further finds have been dated from the early Middle Ages, where layers of quilted fabric were used in the construction of armor—this kept the soldiers warm and protected. Japanese armor was also made in a similar fashion.

IMG_1745-1.jpg

I am a huge fan of Army surplus clothing. It is practical (obviously), made to last, easy to clean and like denim is made from strong fabrics that allow huge scope for dying, recycling, bleaching and easy to sew.

I also love high waisted jeans, I make them super snug and high waisted for myself. It is easy to show the waist with a crop top but I'm afraid my confidence isn't quite at the exposed crop top stage so I found a military shirt in Brooklyn New York recently that been shortened and I think its such a great idea! It can worn over a body, t-shirt as a cropped shirt or as a loose jacket.

Shortening a shirt can be done by hand or by sewing machine and as always can be alternated at home or a local tailors or even dry cleaners. I love the idea of using the shortened shirt and wearing it as a 50's style drop jacket - even rolling the sleeves up or cutting them into a 3/4 length.

When I am looking for information on an item of clothing or piece of textiles there are as we all know loads of information of the internet but I cant help but be a hopeless romantic and love a good book. I find flicking the pages, scanning them for images or words that resinate with what I'm after, often finding things up out at me that I'm not directly looking for but are pleasing to the brain.

Obviously if we bought every book we wanted or thought we needed it would be incredibly expensive and storage would and could be an issue - however there are a couple of options that make using books less expensive and fun.

The local library - I love our local Dalston library. It's a great space to find books, music, etc but also to work, there are reading clubs and writing groups and even a comic club - so cool!

The local charity shops - as you can see below I found some great books on unday from our local Oxfam. Two books on textiles, an old fashion magazine and a book on silent screen actors. All of which provided me with a great source of inspiration and knowledge -costing the grand total of £1.96 which is less than a coffee in some places...

When these books are finished with there a couple of options, give them back to the charity shop and let someone else use them, give them to a friend, sell them on... or keep them.

IMG_0439.jpg

I have been cutting jackets in half down the centre back and re sewing them together in different ways for a while. Its a cool and easy thing to do. Many other designers are also looking to do a very similar thing, for example SJYP have made this fantastic jacket...

1047509_in_pp.jpg

I love the contrast of the blue and white denim - white denim being actually very hard to get second hand or in a vintage form. So a little light bulb 💡went off in my head - why not try bleaching... Design Project to follow shortly but for now I couldn't help showing it off!

PreLoved Kilo Sale Comes To Hackney

Jacket & Gillet - Pre Loved Kilo Sale.

Jacket & Gillet - Pre Loved Kilo Sale.

If you love vintage clothing and you love a bargain that there is no better event to attend than the Pre Loved Kilo Sale.

Advertised as 6 tonnes of preloved, vintage and retro clothing by weight. Only £15 per kilo. two cities every weekend! These can be found on their Facebook page.

Every time the Pre Loved Kilo Sale comes to the Hackney Round Chapel, I make the effort to go - and it always pays off.

Yesterday I popped into the sale knowing that I didn't really need anything. I've been mulling over a project reusing denim jackets...  There were rails of dresses, blouses, jackets, you name it, but knowing I have enough clothes I stayed clear and just hit the denim jackets rails - I thought I might as well see if there's anything I could reuse.

Jackpot!

On entry you pay £1.50 and your given a large, clear plastic bag - simply select what you want to buy, pop it (minus the hanger) into your bag and when you've finished - go to the weigh and pay area - and pay.

I managed to control myself and came away with 5 jackets, which price-wise works out as follows -

1 Kilo = £15

5 Denim jackets weighed in at 3 Kilos = £45 = £9 A jacket - not bad!
